A People’s Atlas of Nuclear Colorado condemns Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the targeting and occupation of Ukaine’s Soviet-era nuclear sites, including the Zaporizhzhia power plant and the Chernobyl disaster area. Workers at these facilities have courageously attempted to maintain safety under conditions of extreme duress - particularly at Chernobyl, where the same staff worked round-the-clock and at gunpoint for nearly a month without being able to return home. Vladimir Putin’s implicit threats to use nuclear weapons in the conflict have overshadowed the ways that Cold War legacies have already been weaponized. Zaporizhzhia and Chernobyl underscore how there exists no bright line between military and civilian applications of nuclear technology.
